World Winery Map launches interactive global viticulture database

The newly launched World Winery Map, an interactive database dedicated to global viticultural terroir, has mapped over 4.3 million vines and 104,000 wineries across 90 countries. The project utilizes the Copernicus GLO-30 topographic model to provide precise geospatial data, including altitude, slope, solar radiation, soil composition, and climate indicators like the Huglin index.

In Romania, the map identifies 159 vineyards in the Târnave region. Data shows these vineyards have an average altitude of 408 meters and are 3.2°C cooler during the growing season than those in Napa Valley. In Moldova, the Codru region is represented by 7,356 vines and 44 wineries, with an average altitude of 154 meters. The Codru vineyards are noted to be 2.5°C warmer during the growing season than those in Champagne.

Founder Matija Gavrilović stated that for larger plots, up to 16 control points are measured to provide precise altitude intervals rather than single figures. The platform integrates data from 38 independent sources, including 22 official state registries.
