World Winery Map reveals high temperatures in Portuguese wine regions
The World Winery Map, an international platform for viticultural characterization, has released data comparing the climate of Portuguese wine regions to other major global producers.
In the Alentejo region, the average temperature during the vegetative period is 2.8 °C higher than that of Bordeaux, France. The map identifies 16,112 vineyard plots and 205 producers in Alentejo, with an average altitude of 226 meters.
In the Algarve region, the platform mapped 2,046 plots and 33 producers, noting that the average vegetative period temperature is 3.1 °C higher than in Rioja, Spain. The Algarve plots sit at an average altitude of 73 meters.
The platform utilizes the CHELSA climate model and the Copernicus GLO-30 digital terrain model to calculate factors such as altitude, slope, solar exposure, and precipitation. Founder Matija Gavrilović stated that for larger plots, up to 16 measurement points are used to ensure precision. The database currently covers over 4.3 million plots across 90 countries.
