WorldPride Amsterdam draws hundreds of thousands as security tightened after Berlin attack
Hundreds of thousands of revellers are expected to line Amsterdam’s canals for the WorldPride 2026 flagship canal parade, with the event’s slogan “UNITY”. In response to the deadly van attack at Berlin’s Pride—where one person was killed and more than 30 injured—Mayor Femke Halsema announced extra security measures. Dutch police said both visible and covert measures would be deployed, but organisers stress that the focus remains on inclusivity.
Participants said the Berlin attack underscored the importance of Pride, with Julian van der Heide noting it proved “how important and necessary Pride still is”. A ceremony at Amsterdam’s Homomonument saw flowers laid for the Berlin victims. The parade will feature around 80 boats, and a temporary floating stadium along the Prinsengracht is planned to hold about 10,000 spectators.
The celebrations come as reports of discrimination against LGBTQ+ people rise across the Netherlands, prompting calls for safer spaces and continued vigilance.
