World’s End historic pub destroyed by fire in Tilbury

The Grade II-listed World’s End pub in Tilbury has been severely damaged following a major fire on Wednesday, September 23. The blaze, which began around 4:40 pm, was brought under control by the Essex Fire and Rescue Service by 6:30 pm.

Local officials and residents have described the historic landmark as being ‘all but destroyed’. Drone photography shows significant structural damage, including a destroyed roof and debris scattered across the site. The pub is a historic landmark located near Tilbury Fort, with links to figures such as Samuel Pepys and Daniel Defoe.

A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of arson and remains in custody for questioning. The incident follows a series of smaller fires near the site earlier in the week, including fires involving pallets, waste, and containers on September 19 and September 22. Essex Police are currently investigating the cause and are requesting witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.
