Wout van Aert wins opening stage of Denmark Tour amid crash

Wout van Aert returned to competition after an elbow injury and a subsequent infection that forced him out of the Tour de France. In the first stage of the 2026 Denmark Tour in Aalborg, he sprinted past a select group of eight riders to claim victory, with Lukas Kubis second and Henrik Pedersen third. A massive crash early in the stage involved around 40 riders, splitting the peloton and creating a gap of about one minute before the groups rejoined roughly 58 km from the finish. The photo‑finish initially named Jensen Plowright the winner, but a review confirmed van Aert as the true victor and he took the blue PostNord leader’s jersey. The following day Jensen Plowright won the sprint for the second stage, while van Aert finished second and retained his overall lead. Van Aert later told the media he is fully recovered, intends to defend his leader’s jersey in the remaining stages and will use the race to sharpen his form ahead of the Vuelta a España.
