Wout Weghorst draws criticism after religious comments following FC Twente victory
Following FC Twente’s 4-1 comeback victory against Qarabag FK to qualify for the Conference League, striker Wout Weghorst has drawn attention for his frequent religious expressions. After scoring in extra time, Weghorst repeatedly credited God for his strength and energy.
These expressions led to criticism from analyst Johan Derksen, who described Weghorst’s behavior as excessive and labeled him a “Jesus-freak” during a broadcast of Vandaag Inside. Derksen argued that Weghorst’s emotional displays and constant mentions of faith are unnecessary.
Additionally, a satirical article from the publication De Speld claimed that UEFA had launched an investigation into whether God was a registered player for FC Twente, following Weghorst’s comments. The satirical piece joked that the football association was unsure if divine intervention had been properly filed on the European player list.
