WPIAL softball announces section realignment for 2027-2028

The WPIAL has announced new section alignments for the 2027 and 2028 softball seasons, resulting in significant changes for smaller classifications. Due to shifting team numbers, Class 3A will expand from three to four sections, while Class 2A and Class A will see a reduction in sections. Class 2A will move from four sections to three, and Class A will decrease from three sections to two.

The realignment has created a particularly competitive environment in Class 2A Section 3. This section includes Bentworth, Brownsville, Carmichaels, Chartiers-Houston, Frazier, Jefferson-Morgan, and Washington. Notably, every team in this new section qualified for the postseason in the previous spring cycle, including recent finalists and state championship contenders. Coaches have described the new grouping as “brutal” but noted that it will provide teams with essential competitive experience heading into the playoffs.
