WPS Office adds Markdown support for Windows, Mac, and Web

WPS Office has announced the addition of Markdown format support across its Windows, Mac, and Web platforms. This update allows users to open, edit, and save .md files directly within the application.

The software provides two distinct editing modes: source code and “what you see is what you get” (WYSIWYG). Supported elements include headings, emphasis, lists, quotes, tables, images, links, and code blocks. Additionally, the update incorporates mathematical formulas and Mermaid diagrams, which were previously available in limited testing.

WPS stated that the move to support Markdown is driven by the rise of AI and AI agents, as these tools frequently generate or save data in Markdown format. By integrating this support, users can manage AI-generated files within their existing workflow without needing external editors. While features such as bidirectional links, split-screen view, and direct Markdown file creation are not yet available, the company indicated that most of these functions are scheduled for release later this year.
