WRC to introduce new Rally1 regulations in 2027

The FIA is set to implement a major regulatory overhaul for the World Rally Championship (WRC) starting in 2027. The new Rally1 regulations will move away from the current hybrid technology to reduce costs and complexity. The new cars will feature approximately 300 horsepower, utilizing a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo engine derived from Rally2 specifications, and will lack the electric boost provided by current hybrid systems.

To encourage manufacturer participation, the FIA is introducing a cost cap of 345,000 euros per car. The technical specifications will also include standardized components such as five-speed gearboxes, four-wheel drive, and suspension systems derived from Rally2 to limit expensive custom developments. Design freedom will be primarily focused on bodywork and brand identity rather than mechanical complexity.

In preparation for these changes, Toyota GAZOO Racing has been conducting testing in Catalonia. The team is developing a new prototype that moves away from the current Rally2 kit approach. High-profile drivers Kalle Rovanperä and Ott Tänak have been involved in the testing sessions to refine the new vehicle's performance and aerodynamics.
