Wreck of missing fishing vessel Z-592 Hosanna identified

The wreckage of the fishing vessel Z-592 Hosanna has been identified in the English Channel after 46 years. The Belgian-Dutch cutter disappeared on February 14, 1980, while traveling from Plymouth to Scheveningen.

Following a dive by an English team to a depth of 55 meters, researchers confirmed the identity of the vessel through underwater imagery and recovered items, including a radio marked ‘Oostende’. Evidence suggests the ship was struck by another vessel, likely a bulk carrier or large cargo ship, while attempting to cross the shipping lane in dense fog. The impact caused a large dent and a tear in the side of the hull, leading the ship to capsize and sink.

While the identification provides closure for the families of the five crew members—including Piet Guyt and his 14-year-old nephew from Scheveningen—the Stichting Onderzoek Maritieme Vermisten noted that human remains are unlikely to be recovered due to the depth and the amount of sand within the wreck.
