Wrexham appoints former Newcastle recruitment head Steve Nickson as sporting director
Wrexham AFC has officially confirmed the appointment of Steve Nickson as its new sporting director. Nickson, 52, joins the club following a 15-year tenure at Newcastle United, where he most recently served as head of recruitment.
In his new role, Nickson will lead the club’s scouting and player recruitment functions, with an emphasis on exploring global markets to identify high-potential talent. His responsibilities extend beyond transfers to include overseeing football administration, sports medicine, performance, the club’s academy, and establishing a long-term sporting strategy. He will work closely with CEO Michael Williamson and manager Phil Parkinson to support the club’s ambition of reaching the Premier League.
During his time at Newcastle, Nickson was involved in several high-profile transfers, including the signings of Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Sven Botman. At Wrexham, he is tasked with building the necessary structures and talent pathways to support the club's upward trajectory.
