Wrexham unveils plans for multi-million pound city centre regeneration

Wrexham Council has unveiled visual plans for a multi-million pound regeneration project targeting the former Hippodrome site, Henblas Street, and Chester Street. The redevelopment is intended to support the city’s bid for City of Culture 2029.

The project, which is expected to be fully funded by the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme, aims to transform the long-vacant Hippodrome site into a public space. Proposed features include tiered seating, landscaping, a large outdoor screen, water jets, and sail canopies. The streets of Henblas and Chester will be repaved to match the High Street, featuring festoon lighting and additional greenery to support street cafe seating.

The initiative is supported by Wrexham AFC co-owner Rob McElhenney through his business, More Better. While formal sign-off from the Welsh Government is still pending, work is anticipated to begin later this year with a potential completion date in early 2027.
