Wrist health: Experts recommend exercises to prevent long-term arthritis
Medical experts emphasize the importance of proactive wrist care to prevent long-term issues such as osteoarthritis and arthritis. Because the wrist is a complex structure composed of eight carpal bones, the forearm bones, and the metacarpal bases, even minor repetitive stresses or old injuries can disrupt the precise balance of ligaments and bones, leading to pain and loss of mobility decades later.
To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend strengthening the entire kinetic chain of the arm rather than focusing solely on the wrist. Key preventative measures include:
• Shoulder strengthening to reduce the load transferred to the hands. • Grip strength training using stress balls or therapeutic putty. • Controlled flexion and extension exercises with light weights. • Rotational movements (supination and pronation).
Experts, including Andrew Abadeer from the University of South Florida and researcher Sara Larsson from Lund University, note that many individuals only realize the impact of cumulative strain when chronic pain or stiffness begins to interfere with daily activities like dressing or eating.
