Writer and poet Kaiti Manolopoulou-Kaïli passes away
Greek writer and poet Kaiti Manolopoulou-Kaïli has passed away in Athens. She was a prominent figure in the intellectual life of Distomo, a town that served as the primary inspiration for her literary work.
Manolopoulou-Kaïli was a researcher of historical memory, focusing extensively on the Distomo massacre of June 10, 1944. Her most significant work, ‘O atheiristos Iounis. Distomo, 10 Iouniou 1944’ (The Unfettered June), provides a detailed historical account of the event. In this work, she utilized survivor testimonies and historical documents to contrast official German reports—which claimed combatants were killed in battle—with hidden military police reports that documented the mass murder of unarmed civilians.
She was also a founding member of the group that established the Folklore Museum of Distomo, which later became a functional part of the Museum of Nazi Victims. Her funeral is scheduled to take place in Distomo on Tuesday.
