Wrocław heat plant to phase out coal by 2030

Kogeneracja, a subsidiary of the PGE Group, has announced a major technological transformation for the Wrocław heat and power plant. By 2030, the facility will completely cease coal combustion, ending a 125-year era of coal-based energy production in the city.

The modernization plan involves phasing out old coal units and replacing them with high-efficiency gas cogeneration technology, which allows for the simultaneous production of electricity and heat. To increase flexibility and reduce emissions, the system will be supplemented by large-scale heat pumps, electrode boilers, and modern thermal energy storage units.

According to Dariusz Witkowski, the company's president, these new installations will be more flexible, efficient, and less emissive. The transition is designed to ensure the continuous supply of electricity and heating to Wrocław residents throughout the modernization process.
