Wrocław Speedway Grand Prix runs amid torrential rain

A severe thunderstorm dumped 30‑40 liters of water per square metre on Wrocław’s Olympic Stadium, prompting 131 emergency calls and flooding the speedway track. Event director Phil Morris oversaw the preparation of a safe racing surface and chose to continue with the Polish round of the Speedway Grand Prix despite the weather.

Riders initially protested, saying the soaked track and machine‑park conditions were unsafe; Bartosz Zmarzlik and others expressed uncertainty over equipment and personal safety. Nonetheless, the race went ahead, and Polish riders secured podium places, with Zmarzlik finishing among the top three.

The incident highlighted the challenges of staging major motorsport events under extreme weather and the financial pressures on the new promoter, Mayfield Sports Events, to keep the Grand Prix on schedule.
