Wrocław-Strachowice Airport to expand for US Air Force needs

The Wrocław-Strachowice Airport in Poland is undergoing a major expansion to support United States Air Force operations. A contract worth 539.5 million PLN has been signed with the construction firm PORR S.A. to develop infrastructure capable of handling large American military transport aircraft.

The project includes the construction of five key facilities: a parking apron with four stands for C-5 Galaxy aircraft, a separate apron with three stands for C-130 Hercules aircraft, taxiways, a modern military fire station, and a building for the airport duty technician. While not yet a permanent US Army base, the site is being developed as a significant transshipment hub.

Regional officials note that Lower Silesia’s strategic location and transport infrastructure make it a strong candidate for permanent US military presence. Discussions regarding potential base locations include Powidz and Leśnica near Wrocław. The region's existing road networks, such as the A4 motorway, and its distance from the eastern border are cited as key factors for both military logistics and long-term economic investment.
