Wärtsilä expands role in Origem Energia power plant projects

Technology company Wärtsilä has expanded its involvement in seven power plant projects for the Brazilian energy firm Origem Energia. Building upon previous agreements for engine supplies, Wärtsilä will now also provide process design, procurement, and above-ground construction (EPC) services.

The projects, which include the Pilar Nova, Pilar, and Manguaba I–V plants located in Northeast Brazil, will utilize 36 Wärtsilä 34SG engines. These facilities are designed to provide 371 megawatts of flexible capacity to the Brazilian electrical grid, helping to balance supply and demand as the country increases its use of renewable energy sources.

The plants will operate using onshore natural gas from Origem Energia's own resources. Commercial operations for the Pilar Nova and Pilar plants are expected to begin in October 2028, followed by the Manguaba I–V plants in August 2029.
