Wärtsilä showcases decarbonization technologies in Esposende

During the 18th edition of the Start Business Tour, Wärtsilä showcased its technological innovations for energy efficiency and decarbonization in the maritime and energy sectors at its Esposende facility in Portugal.

The company presented various solutions, including engines adapted to different fuels, hybrid systems, digital optimization tools, and carbon capture technologies. A notable highlight was the 2022 development of an engine designed specifically to run on methanol.

Wärtsilä has operated in Portugal since 1992, maintaining units in Esposende and Setúbal. The Esposende site employs approximately 50 workers and serves clients in Portugal and northern Spain, focusing on engine components, research, inspection, and 24-hour technical assistance. In 2025, the company reported a 17% increase in orders within the Portuguese market, with maritime activity growing by approximately two million euros. Globally, the multinational operates in 79 countries, employs 17,900 people, and recorded a turnover of approximately seven billion euros in 2025.
