WSDOT holds open house for SR 164 safety study

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is conducting an improvement study for State Route 164, focusing on the highway stretch between Enumclaw and Auburn. To gather public feedback, an in-person open house is scheduled for October 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Chinook Elementary in Auburn, with a virtual option available until November 2.

SR 164 has been identified as a ‘high injury’ corridor by the Puget Sound Regional Council. Data indicates significant safety concerns, including a five-and-a-half-mile stretch near Auburn that has recorded 52 serious injuries or fatalities. Other high-risk sections have also seen multiple serious incidents.

This planning study aims to inform a report for the state legislature by summer 2027. The findings will build upon a 2009 study that recommended various intersection improvements. Any resulting projects will still be subject to standard funding, design, and environmental review processes.
