WSDOT replaces I-90 text alerts with mobile app
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has transitioned from sending text alerts for I-90 travel notifications to using its mobile app. As of August 31, the agency will no longer provide text-based updates.
WSDOT stated the move is intended to provide “more efficient, user-friendly updates and information.” The mobile app serves as a central hub for real-time travel alerts, mountain pass conditions, traffic cameras, and roadway information. Users can enable specific notifications for the Snoqualmie Pass and receive alerts for incidents between North Bend and Vantage that are expected to add 30 minutes or more to travel times, including planned construction or avalanche-control closures.
Critics of the change have noted that the app requires a smartphone and a stable internet connection, which may be limited in rural areas and mountain passes, whereas text messages are compatible with nearly all mobile devices.
