WSG Tirol and Wattens municipality clash over stadium renovation liability

A dispute has emerged between the Austrian Bundesliga club WSG Tirol and the municipality of Wattens regarding the financing and liability for the renovation of the Gernot-Langes-Stadion. The project, intended to modernize the stadium for top-flight football, is estimated to cost over six million euros.

The conflict intensified after the municipal council rejected a request from the club to assume liability for the construction and expansion. WSG sports director Stefan Köck expressed deep disappointment over the decision. In response, Mayor Lukas Schmied stated that the club’s recent criticisms had crossed certain boundaries and called for a personal meeting to resolve the matter.

Local opposition parties, including the ÖVP, FPÖ, SPÖ, and MFG, have expressed support for the liability assumption, citing potential benefits such as 80,000 euros in annual additional revenue from new parking facilities. The municipality, however, justified its refusal by citing excessive financial risks.

WSG Tirol has countered the municipality’s financial claims, arguing that the club has already covered approximately one-third of the investment costs and that current municipal payments are tied to previous renovations and lease agreements rather than being purely new subsidies.
