WSIB job cuts and office closures spark criticism in Ontario
The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is implementing significant job cuts and office closures across Ontario, sparking criticism from political leaders and distress among employees.
According to the Ontario Compensation Employees Union (OCEU), 466 workers have received redundancy notices, including 131 in Windsor. In Northern Ontario, 238 positions in Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, and Timmins are being eliminated as regional offices close. Affected staff have been offered exit packages or the option to relocate to remaining offices, such as the one in London.
Ontario Liberal Interim Leader John Fraser condemned the decision, arguing that moving jobs south ignores the unique needs of Northern Ontario's mining and forestry sectors. Fraser stated that the closures represent a “total disconnect” from the needs of northern communities.
WSIB has maintained that service levels will remain consistent, noting that most claim and account-related services are accessible via phone or online platforms.
