WTA begins genetic testing for athlete eligibility
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has begun implementing a new eligibility policy that requires athletes to undergo a one-time genetic test to determine biological sex. The testing, which identifies the presence of the SRY gene, can be performed via blood test or cheek swab. Jessica Pegula confirmed that the rollout has officially commenced at the Cincinnati Open.
The policy has generated mixed reactions within the tennis community. Aryna Sabalenka has voiced support for the measure, citing the need for fairness in competition. Conversely, Coco Gauff expressed concerns that the initiative could be used as a tool to target the transgender community, despite supporting the concept of fairness in sports.
Martina Navratilova noted that while some players may agree with the policy, there is a hesitation to speak publicly due to the risk of social vilification. The WTA stated it is committed to implementing the policy in a respectful and dignified manner.
