Wu Kang-ren begins filming historical drama ‘Zhu Gu Niang’

Taiwanese actor Wu Kang-ren has begun filming the historical drama ‘Zhu Gu Niang’ at Hengdian World Studios. The production is an S+ project for Youku, adapted from the novel ‘Zhu Gu Niang Jin Tian Diao Keng Le Mei’ by the author ‘Wo Xiang Chi Rou’.

Unlike typical idol dramas, the series is described as a political power struggle focusing on a female lead. The story follows Zhu Ying, played by Chen Lijun, as she disguises herself as a man to rise through the official ranks. Wu Kang-ren is expected to play Wang Yunhe, the female lead’s mentor and spiritual guide, a role that involves significant screen time. The cast also includes Wei Zheming.

Leaked images from the set show Wu in traditional official attire, including a purple robe and official hat. While his appearance has drawn mixed reactions from netizens, there is significant interest in how he will handle the period dialogue and whether his accent will require dubbing.
