Wu Zetian: The rise of China's only female emperor
Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history, rose to power during the Tang Dynasty. Originally entering the palace as a ‘lady of talent’ under Emperor Taizong, she was later sent to a Buddhist temple following his death.
She was recalled to the palace by Emperor Li Zhi, who eventually named her empress consort. Due to Li Zhi’s prolonged illness, Wu Zetian began assisting in state affairs from behind a curtain. This arrangement led to the pair being referred to as the ‘Two Sacred Sovereigns,’ signaling her rising political influence and status on par with the emperor.
