Wudang Mountains attract millions of pilgrims and tourists
The Wudang mountain range in central China remains a major destination for both religious pilgrims and tourists. According to government figures, the area's scenic peaks, ancient palaces, and religious sites attracted 14 million visits in 2025.
Considered sacred in Taoism, the mountain complex features buildings dating back to the 7th century, with significant expansions occurring during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The range consists of 72 peaks that converge toward Tianzhu Peak, where the Golden Hall is located at an elevation of approximately 1,610 meters.
The site holds deep symbolic importance in Chinese philosophy. The lower slopes are associated with fire, while the deity enshrined at the summit, Zhenwu, is linked to water. This symbolism reflects the concept that water from the top moistens the earth while fire below provides warmth for growth.
