Wuhan lockdown film ‘White-Clad Heroes’ sparks debate in China
The film ‘White-Clad Heroes’ (Baiyi Nixingzhe), which depicts the 76-day COVID-19 lockdown in Wuhan, is scheduled for release in mainland China on November 6. Directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Herman Yau and starring Andy Lau and Yang Zishan, the production recreates the experiences of healthcare workers, patients, and residents during the initial outbreak between January and April 2020.
Although filming concluded in December 2020, the release has been delayed for nearly six years. The announcement has triggered mixed reactions on Chinese social media. While the film aims to pay tribute to those who supported one another during the crisis, some netizens have expressed backlash, stating they are unwilling to relive the painful memories of the pandemic and the government’s response.
