Wuppertal rail service halted by faulty switch after weeks of disruptions

Since mid‑June 2026 the rail network around Wuppertal has suffered a series of signalling failures. An initial defect in a signal box on 18 June stopped trains between Düsseldorf and Wuppertal. Although service was briefly restored, the same box failed again, extending the outage for several days. On 3 July a defective switch between Wuppertal‑Oberbarmen and Hagen caused a new standstill, halting S‑Bahn and regional trains and forcing the deployment of replacement buses. Deutsche Bahn said the section was unusable and that the duration of the disruption was unclear.

Wuppertal’s mayor, Miriam Scherff, condemned the repeated problems, describing them as “missmanagement” and sending an open letter to the railway’s regional representative demanding a comprehensive modernisation of the signalling infrastructure. The railway issued an apology and said technical teams were working to repair the switch. Commuters were advised to check online information for alternative routes.
