Wuppertal signs purchase agreement for former Kaufhof building
The city of Wuppertal has signed a purchase agreement for the former Kaufhof building located at Neumarkt. This move implements a city council decision aimed at revitalizing the Elberfeld city center by repurposing the historic property for public use.
According to current plans, the building is intended to house the Central Library and the Bergische Weiterbildungskolleg. Mayor Miriam Scherff stated that the acquisition secures a central location and creates new perspectives for the city, aiming to transform the site into a lively meeting point.
The administration is currently working on the specific usage concept, as well as the legal, tax, and organizational frameworks required for operation. Officials are also exploring possibilities for interim use of the building. The finalized usage concepts are expected to be presented to the city council for further consultation in the first quarter of 2027.
