Wuppertal train service resumes after two‑week signalling outage

After a two‑week disruption caused by a failure of the modern electronic signal box (Stellwerk) in the Vohwinkel district of Wuppertal, Deutsche Bahn restored regular train operations on the Düsseldorf‑Wuppertal line on 2 July. The hourly RE 4 regional service and S‑Bahn trains are running again, though many replacement buses continue to serve commuters.

The outage, which began on 18 June, was traced to faulty components in the signalling computer system. Technicians replaced the components, restored the Stellwerk and declared it stable, but two additional signal failures later caused brief further interruptions. The parallel Cologne‑Wuppertal‑Hagen route remains closed for a major renewal project scheduled to finish on 10 July.

Local SPD politicians condemned the incident, demanding that the federal government and Deutsche Bahn prioritize a comprehensive modernisation of signalling and control technology to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
