Wuppertal unveils plans for new Bockmühle school

The city of Wuppertal has presented the design and timeline for the new Gesamtschule Bockmühle in the Heckinghausen district. Demolition and hazardous material remediation of the former industrial site are nearly complete, marking a transition into the ground preparation phase.

The project aims to revitalize an unused industrial area by creating a modern educational complex capable of accommodating up to 1,500 students. The design, developed by GMP architects, includes a four-story building wing that integrates the site's historic administrative building. To honor the site's history, the facade will feature metal elements reminiscent of the former metalworking plant.

Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2027, with the school scheduled to be operational for the 2030/31 school year. The project will utilize system construction with prefabricated elements to ensure a rapid build process. The new facility will also incorporate sustainable features, such as green roofs and solar energy utilization.
