AJ Styles retires after loss to Gunther, reflects on WWE plans and future match possibilities

AJ Styles ended his in‑ring career with a loss to Gunther at the Royal Rumble 2026 Premium Live Event and was subsequently inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. He has taken a backstage role that includes scouting and coaching, and launched the "Phenomenally Retro" podcast.

Styles said he may keep the door open for one more match, ideally alongside his son, and described his retirement as a personal decision rather than a need for a farewell tour. He also recounted receiving the final WWE championship belt with his custom side plates as a keepsake.

Commenting on WWE's creative direction, Styles acknowledged criticism that the company mishandled Gunther after he retired John Cena, Goldberg and Styles himself, agreeing that the continual “retiring” of top talent might have been a misstep. He defended the creative team’s challenges and expressed understanding of fan concerns.

Additionally, Styles weighed in on WWE's SummerSlam ticket pricing, suggesting that high prices could be affecting sales, and urged cheaper options for nose‑bleed seats.
