Sheamus Leaves WWE After Contract Dispute, AEW Interest Discussed

Former WWE Champion Sheamus, 48, has been moved to the Alumni section of WWE.com, confirming his impending departure after nearly two decades with the promotion. Sources say he turned down a restructured contract that offered reduced pay, prompting WWE to let the deal lapse while he remains under his existing contract until it expires.

The exit has sparked speculation about a move to rival promotion AEW. Fellow wrestler Claudio Castagnoli is reportedly advocating for Sheamus, and AEW talent have expressed both admiration and concerns over roster depth. "Everyone I talked to was like, ‘I really like Sheamus,’" AEW insider Bryan Alvarez noted, adding that the company’s already crowded lineup makes a new signing challenging.

WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff advised Sheamus to “pick and choose” occasional appearances in promotions such as AEW, AAA or NJPW rather than committing to a full‑time deal, emphasizing the experience over money. Bischoff likened the situation to “the circle of freaking life,” saying a veteran can become “baggage” if not generating revenue.
