WWE targets AEW to gain control over wrestler salaries

WWE is reportedly engaging in an aggressive competitive strategy against AEW to gain greater control over wrestler salaries. According to analysis by Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE is utilizing a "loss-leader" mentality, where the company accepts short-term financial losses to weaken AEW as a credible competitor.

The presence of AEW has historically provided wrestlers with significant negotiating leverage, driving up pay standards for WWE's main roster. By reducing competition, WWE could potentially regain the ability to manage talent costs more strictly. This competition is manifesting through direct programming counter-scheduling; for instance, WWE has scheduled events in Texas to overlap with AEW's 'All In' event on August 30, and has planned simultaneous shows in the Chicago region for late September.

Despite these competitive tactics, WWE's financial performance remains strong. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reported revenues of $620.9 million, representing a 12% increase year-over-year, with an adjusted EBITDA of $368.3 million.
