WWF Adria launches campaign to protect Adriatic Sea biodiversity

WWF Adria has launched a communication campaign titled ‘Eat like a local and protect the sea like a professional’ to promote the conservation of Adriatic Sea biodiversity through sustainable seafood choices.

The initiative encourages consumers to select sustainable alternatives to species that are legally protected or whose harvesting threatens marine habitats. For example, the campaign suggests choosing the invasive blue crab instead of lobsters with external eggs, and mussels instead of razor clams, which can damage coastal rocks during extraction.

Additionally, the campaign promotes the consumption of the invasive lionfish (vatrenjača) during the sea bass season to help protect indigenous species. Patrik Krstinić, the marine program manager at WWF Adria, stated that the goal is to show how responsible choices in restaurants, fish markets, or shops can contribute to preserving unique marine habitats and species.
