WWF-Canada calls for $1.5 billion for nature restoration in Budget 2026

WWF-Canada President and CEO Megan Leslie has criticized the federal Budget 2026, stating it lacks the necessary investment to restore the natural infrastructure underpinning the Canadian economy.

While acknowledging federal commitments to protect 30 percent of Canada’s lands and waters by 2030, Leslie emphasized that repairing damaged ecosystems is equally vital. The organization is calling for at least $1.5 billion over the next four years to fund nature restoration across the country, including the restoration of forests, wetlands, and other habitats.

Additionally, WWF-Canada urged the government to meet its international obligations under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework by providing $300 million in long-term grants through Global Affairs Canada to support global nature protection and restoration.
