WWF Czechia releases 2,100 sturgeon into Dyje and Morava rivers

Experts from WWF Czechia have released approximately 2,100 small sturgeon into the Dyje and Morava rivers near Břeclav. These rare fish were raised at the Pohořelice Fish Farm and are descendants of original wild Danube sturgeon.

To facilitate scientific study, each fish has been fitted with a microchip. This allows ichthyologists to monitor their movement, habitat preferences, and survival rates within the river systems. The goal of the monitoring is to better understand the specific environmental conditions required to successfully reintroduce the species to the wild.

The release is part of the ‘Water is Life’ campaign, which focuses on the protection and restoration of river landscapes. Experts emphasize that successful reintroduction requires not only releasing fish but also restoring the natural functioning and connectivity of rivers to ensure they have adequate food and space to reproduce.
