WWF denounces widespread fire risks and illegalities in Enna
WWF Sicilia Centrale has formally alerted the Prefecture of Enna regarding an emergency of widespread wildfires and environmental illegalities in the province. The association claims that current fire outbreaks in forests, pastures, and urban interface zones are not solely due to climate conditions, but rather point to "reiterated illicit behaviors" and a lack of public presence in rural areas.
Key issues highlighted include the widespread failure of landowners to comply with municipal ordinances regarding land cleaning, the removal of dry vegetation, and the creation of firebreaks. Additionally, the WWF reported illegal activities such as prohibited stubble burning, unauthorized agricultural fires, and the combustion of waste in illegal micro-dumps. The organization is calling for strengthened investigations to combat arson and address a perceived sense of impunity among those responsible.
