WWF Portugal and Lidl launch ecological recovery project in Nazaré
A 100,000 euro ecological restoration project has been launched to recover the Mata Nacional do Valado and the area surrounding Monte de São Bartolomeu in Nazaré. Funded by Lidl Portugal and developed by WWF Portugal in coordination with the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), the initiative aims to repair damage caused by storm Kristin.
The project covers approximately 25 hectares and focuses on removing woody debris, restoring access trails, and controlling invasive species such as acacia and casuarina. To increase forest resilience against wildfires and climate change, native species including pine, strawberry tree, holm oak, and cork oak will be planted. The intervention is part of the national ecological restoration program, D-Evolução, and is scheduled to continue with forest management actions through May 2027.
