WWF report finds significant gaps in Austrian urban greening plans

A WWF assessment of 14 Austrian cities has identified significant gaps in urban greening plans. While all participating municipalities, including Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, and Klagenfurt, have formulated greening goals, the NGO found a lack of connection between these objectives and concrete measures, funding, and success monitoring.

According to the report, eight of the 14 cities examined—including Dornbirn, Linz, Salzburg, and Steyr—currently lack structured urban greening plans. The WWF noted that less than half of Austria’s urban population currently benefits from the cooling effects of urban greenery, which is critical for mitigating the climate crisis.

Expert Maria Peer emphasized that cities must translate greening goals into consistent, long-term planning. The WWF stated that federal and state governments need to provide sufficient financial resources, personnel, and technical support to meet the EU Commission’s 2030 Biodiversity Strategy requirements.
