WWF report warns of global hunger and obesity crisis
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has released its ‘2026 Living Planet Report,’ titled ‘Science of Hope,’ which highlights the dual crisis of malnutrition and obesity. According to the report, more than 673 million people suffer from undernourishment, while over 1 billion people live with obesity.
The report identifies current food and agricultural systems as primary drivers of biodiversity loss and habitat destruction. These systems are also significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and the overexploitation of natural resources. Furthermore, the existing food model is linked to the rise of diet-related diseases.
To address these issues, the WWF calls for a systemic transformation from production to consumption. Key recommendations include promoting sustainable dietary patterns, reducing food loss and waste, and shifting the direction of the approximately $470 billion allocated annually to environmentally harmful agricultural subsidies toward sustainable practices. The report emphasizes that farmers transitioning to nature-positive methods require increased access to finance, technical support, and markets.
