WWF urges urgent protection for monumental chestnut trees in Calabria

The WWF Calabria Citra has called on Calabria Verde to implement urgent interventions for the monumental chestnut trees in the Cozzo del Pesco Oasis. While the association welcomes the handover of the oasis, it has raised concerns regarding phytosanitary and structural issues affecting the ancient trees.

The WWF highlighted three main vulnerabilities: physiological stress caused by summer droughts, biomechanical issues such as internal decay in the trunks, and unbalanced main branches. The organization is seeking clarification on whether specialized safety measures for these 'vegetal patriarchs' are included in the current work plans or if they have been excluded from the scope of intervention.
