Wylfa on Anglesey selected for UK’s first SMR nuclear plant

Wylfa on Anglesey has been selected as the site for the United Kingdom’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) nuclear power station. The project is expected to serve as a major economic driver for North Wales, potentially creating 3,000 jobs at its peak in Ynys Môn and an additional 5,000 roles across the UK supply chain.

The programme aims to pioneer regional skills through new vocational and academic training initiatives. Industry leaders and government bodies, including the Welsh Government and Isle of Anglesey County Council, have engaged in discussions regarding the regional benefits of the technology. Supporters suggest the development will help position Wales as a significant clean energy hub to assist in the transition to net zero.

However, the development faces opposition from groups such as People Against Wylfa B, who have expressed concerns to the Energy Secretary regarding safety, environmental impacts, and geopolitical security.
