Wylfa selected as site for UK’s first SMR nuclear power station

Wylfa on Anglesey has been selected as the site for the United Kingdom’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) nuclear power station. The project is expected to transform Anglesey and North Wales by leveraging the region's existing nuclear expertise.

A recent roundtable discussion, led by Bentley Systems, brought together representatives from industry, local government, and the Welsh Government to examine the regional benefits of the programme. Attendees included Gary Pritchard, leader of the Isle of Anglesey County Council, and Llinos Medi AS/MP for Anglesey.

The initiative aims to pioneer new skills in the region through the development of vocational and academic training programmes, ultimately creating jobs in Anglesey. The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Wales Cymru has expressed support for the project, noting that Wales is well-positioned to become a clean energy hub for the UK as part of the transition to net zero.
