Wyoming DOT implements mandatory certification for Teton Pass

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has launched the Safe Pass certification program for drivers using Teton Pass. Starting October 1, drivers of certain large vehicles must complete a mandatory self-certification process to use the pass.

The requirement applies to all drivers operating recreational vehicles (RVs), towing trailers, or operating vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating exceeding 10,000 pounds. Certification must be renewed annually through the WYDOT website, where drivers review educational materials regarding mountain driving, braking protocols, and weight limitations.

Failure to comply with the program may result in significant penalties. Drivers exceeding the 10,000-pound limit without certification or those violating the 60,000-pound permanent weight restriction may face misdemeanor charges and fines of up to $750 or $1,000, respectively. Officials encourage early online certification to prevent travel delays and ensure safety on the steep mountain grades.
