Wyoming drought triggers weed warnings and wildlife road risks

Ongoing drought conditions in Wyoming are prompting several state agencies to issue warnings to residents and producers. Governor Mark Gordon has issued Executive Order 2026-005, which authorizes emergency relief permits for vehicles transporting oversize and overweight loads of livestock feed and animals to accelerate the delivery of hay to drought-stricken areas.

The Wyoming Weed & Pest Council (WWPC) and the Wyoming Association of Conservation Districts (WACD) are warning that the influx of drought relief hay increases the risk of spreading invasive noxious weeds. Producers and buyers are urged to use certified weed-free forage and report any new infestations to local weed and pest districts for rapid response.

Simultaneously, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is warning motorists of increased big game animal activity near highways. Due to diminished natural food and water sources, animals are clustering around roadways and drainage areas, which act as unintended oases. Drivers are advised to reduce speeds, scan ditches, and exercise extra caution during dawn and dusk to avoid collisions.
