Freedom Caucus faces major primary election losses

The Freedom Caucus, a hard-right conservative group, faced significant setbacks during recent primary elections across several states, most notably in Wyoming. In Wyoming, the caucus saw a major reduction in its legislative influence. Preliminary results indicate that approximately 14 members or aligned candidates lost their seats, including House Speaker Chip Neiman, who lost his bid for the Senate to Ogden Driskill. Other notable losses included founder John Bear and several incumbents in Laramie, Albany, and Natrona counties.

The caucus's influence in the Wyoming House is expected to shrink from roughly 35 votes to approximately 10 members in the 62-member chamber. This shift follows a period of political scrutiny, including the ‘Checkgate’ scandal involving the distribution of checks to members on the House floor.

These losses in Wyoming mirror a broader trend for the group in other states. In Florida, Catalina Lauf lost a House GOP primary despite backing from Donald Trump and the Freedom Caucus Fund. Similar defeats were reported for caucus-aligned candidates in South Carolina and Tennessee, suggesting a potential waning of the group's influence among GOP voters.
