Wyoming Governor warns Proposition 1 could devastate local services
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon has issued a warning regarding Proposition 1, a ballot initiative that would reduce residential property taxes by 50 percent. In an op-ed, Gordon argued that such a reduction would have an “immediate and devastating effect” on essential community services.
Gordon noted that property tax revenue is utilized by local entities rather than the state government. The funds primarily support K-12 public schools, law enforcement, fire protection, community colleges, libraries, and road maintenance. He emphasized that local control is a conservative principle, allowing residents to hold local officials accountable for the services they fund.
While supporters of the proposition argue that statewide property taxes have increased by an average of over 70 percent since 2019, Gordon cautioned that the initiative could lead to the dismantling of a taxation system Wyoming has utilized since before statehood. He suggested that current relief measures, such as homeowner exemptions, already exist to mitigate tax burdens.
