Wyoming leads U.S. in auto repair shop density per capita

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that Wyoming has the highest number of auto repair shops per capita in the United States. While California maintains the highest total number of establishments at 20,998, its large population places it 24th in density rankings.

Other high-ranking states for shop density include South Dakota and Montana. These states are characterized by large land areas, sparse populations, and high vehicle miles traveled, indicating a high dependency on automobiles. In contrast, Arizona ranks lowest in the nation for shop density per capita.

As of the fourth quarter of 2025, there were 176,403 automotive repair and maintenance establishments operating in the U.S., with a national average of 51.6 shops per 100,000 people.
